Probably wanted Batum to take his time picking up the ball so they can set up whatever they were wanting to do. Basically delay the start of the 5 seconds. Teams do that a lot to the point where they don't even pick up the ball they just wait out of bounds until the ref picks it up and gives it to them lol

He wanted Batum to take his time inbounding the ball and he was also waiting on one of his teammates to come down so that he wouldn’t have to bring the ball up while getting pressed 74 feet from the basket. It’s easier to get the ball around half court rather than driving it up the full court and looking for your shot.

Refs shouldn't be able to suddenly decide a push-off that happens 50 times a night in the NBA is actually an offensive foul with 10 seconds left in a 1 possession game. If there was any clarity as to when that would be called, Kawhi probably doesn't do it in the first place. But it's so arbitrary when they decide to call one, and because Kawhi reasonably assumed they wouldn't call that in that moment, since they rarely call it in any moment, the outcome was entirely in the refs hands there.
